Meet the military saviour of 16th Century Korea. Enduring raids from the Manchu in the North and the Wagu Japanese in the south, Chosun Korea is under constant threat at all times. At the end of the 16th century, the threat just got a lot more serious. Having just consolidated his holdings in Japan, the Emperor's Regent, Toyotomi Hideyoshi has his eyes on China. To get there, there is the little matter of a sleepy state of farmers and scholars called Chosun (Joseon). The only hope for the survival of Chosun lies with a man named Yi Sun Shin!

I liked many things about this book: its abundance of facts, its readability, the subject matter - a hero who has not received nearly as much fame as he deserves in the West. I also liked some aspects of the author's style: stepping out of the narrative to offer comments to the reader, and a sometimes sly sense of humor. However, there are things I didn't like so much. First, the book needs a good copyedit and some professional editing. Spelling and grammar are inconsistent throughout, and his Romanization of Korean words and proper names does not follow either of the systems currently in use. Second, he uses an unnecessary framing of the story that is not revealed until the last few pages. Last is his habit of making up completely ridiculous - and even offensive - names for invented characters. There's nothing wrong with including fictional characters in a biographical work, as not all historical figures have come down to us with their names intact. But come on, now. "So So" as a mediocre public official; "Fo Gots Naim" for a figure whose name the author "fo got"; "Lo So Kuk" and his cousin "No Luk" who are unlucky soldiers; and, most disturbing of all, "Ly Ying Fag" for a court official given to speaking falsehoods. Really?? That peek behind the author's veil was distasteful and unworthy of the book's great subject.

Yi Sun Shin eBook Sam Baker Reviews

Present for my husband who is retired military, and a reader of military history.
I sort of got hooked by the amateurish voice of the narrator. Go figure. Nice overview of Yi Sun Shin's life, though not in a scholarly way.
Yi Sun Shin is the definitive historical account of Korea's greatest naval commander and his victories against the Japanese Navy. Sam Baker, the preeminent Western scholar of 16th Century Korean Naval History, masterfully guides the reader through a detailed and informative, yet entertaining treatment of a subject some readers may have otherwise considered dry.
I found the prose refreshingly informal, with leanings more towards Twain than Faulkner! I suspect other readers who abhor the "scholastic stink" of some academic writing will agree.
Not the best book, not by a long shot, but it gets five stars because there simply is no other books out there available, on shin. So this is the only English language book I have found on Korea's greatest admiral.
I wish the writer took himself a little more seriously. He is good when he doesn't wander off a little. However, his knowledge of the subject is excellent and it's a fantastic story. If your interested in Naval History, anyone's Naval History this book is for you.
